Chris Christie is getting a lot of attention for a video of a stump speech in which he says people with drug problems should be treated like people with a medical issue, not criminals. It is typical for Christie to defend people if he has a personal relationship to them. In this one he spoke of his mother’s smoking and a college classmate addicted to drugs. Another case of this defense when it would have been easier to say nothing hasn’t received any attention lately. Christie appointed a lawyer who defended Muslims detained after the Sept. 11attacks to a state Superior Court judgeship. The appointment of Sohail Mohammed, 47, brought on critics who said it would bring Sharia law, the law of Islam, to this country. To which Christie responded, “It’s just crazy, and I’m tired of dealing with the crazies. It’s just unnecessary to be accusing this guy of things just because of his religious background. I’m happy that he’s willing to serve after all this baloney.” Christie took a stand that was commendable but one that probably won’t be repeated since so many of the people he needs to attract in the Republican primary wouldn’t see it as the act of courage it was. You can see it on video here.
