Because the rest of the world doesn’t understand how our political election system works, they hear candidates who lead the polls make outrageous speeches and they think such people represent all Americans’ thinking. You can make a good argument that both parties had better candidates in old the days of smoke-filled backroom wheeling and dealing than under this primary system. Appealing to the small minority and largely uninformed in a few states that are not representative of the country as a whole gives us all a bad name. And cost us credibility. It also plays into the hands of those recruiting militants based on a war on religion.
