That time I impersonated John Lewis

Our mutual friends say John Lewis and I got along so well for 40 years because we are so much alike. I am not in his league in any way but I once impersonated him in what became known as the John Lewis Caper.

In Tampa for the Republican National Convention in 2012 we were told via memo to be at a certain place at a certain time for credentials. We were. Finally one of the minions in charge of looking important showed up and asked who I was. Told him and that we were overdue for a video shoot and needed those credentials asap.

Ninrod left and showed up 15 minutes later like he had never been there. Again he asked who I was. I told him John Lewis. “Nice to meet you, John,” he said and called me John for the duration.

My colleague, Michael Symons, John Schoonejongen and Tom Costello witnessed this and somehow managed to keep a straight face until he left. Schooner then said “He doesn’t know much history.” Throughout the convention they called me “John.”

I called John Lewis and told him I was at the Republican convention impersonating him. And got by with it. He laughed out loud.
