When N.J. state Sen. Joe Kyrillos came out for Jeb Bush it was national news because Kyrillos had been chums for a long time with Chris Christie in politics and private life. What most of the national media didn’t know is Kyrillos’ break can be traced back to when he carried the GOP flag against U.S. Sen. Bob Melendez. Christie helped him raise money but made only a couple of diner appearances on his behalf. When Sen. Frank Lautenberg died, Christie named someone else to fill the seat. Kyrillos and his supporters thought the governor should have done more. Now comes another New Jersey Republican senator who is fed up with Christie and he has some of the same objections with Christie’s performance, according to an interview with Politickernj.com.
Mike Doherty
Mike Doherty described an event for the local Republican slate at a Hot Dog Johnny’s:
“There were no speeches, none of the candidates running were allowed to speak, there was no platform or microphone, no nothing. And we just stood around, freeholder candidates, sheriff, legislative candidates, Republicans, and basically stood around with our thumb up our asses and waited for the bus to show up, and the governor got out, and he was surrounded by what I felt was an extremely large number of states troopers.”
It told Doherty that Christie’s strategy was he didn’t want to be seen with Republicans. It was obvious that Christie’s plans involved winning a big re-election victory so he could run for the 2016 GOP nomination and say he could bring Democrats and Republicans together. Doherty says Christie should have campaigned for Republicans and accepted a smaller margin of victory. The Republican Party picked up no seats in the Legislature despite Christie’s large victory margin. Nonetheless, Doherty notes, Republican leadership in the Legislature continues to carry Christie’s water.
