Trump’s next trip to Georgia is scheduled for Jan. 4 at the Whitfield County airport in Dalton. There is history here.
After rump dumped Ivana he married Marla Maples, mother of Tiffany, the one you hardly ever see. Marla lived close to two of my cousins who rode the school bus with her.
Before they were married, Marla wanted Trump to know the locals, and probably show off, so she took him to her high school’s big homecoming football game. It had been 10 years since she was Homecoming Queen. Dalton is about 30 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and 90 north of Atlanta. The big game was played in Tunnel Hill.
Trump was not impressed.
He compared Marla’s parents to TV’s “The Beverly Hillbillies.” He told a New York newspaper editor, “That’s exactly her family, except they came to New York City.” (And didn’t have oil so he had no reason to like them. Her daddy was a developer and Baptist church deacon and singer.)
The editor said Trump assumed a fake Southern accent in mimicking his former mother-in-law and said Marla was constantly surrounded by “dumb Southerners.”
It’s not just Dalton folks.
In his book “Fear: Trump in the White House,” Washington Post’s Bob Woodward wrote Trump made fun of former former Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions’ Southern accent, calling him “stupid” and an “idiot.” and “mentally retarded.” Sessions was also one of Trump’s attorneys general.
Northwest Whitfield, Marla’s alma mater, was playing arch rival Murray County. The happy couple arrived late, probably a good thing because those clever Murray County Indians ran through a green banner that read, “Ivana says, ‘Go Big Green.’ ” They left around half time.
(Journalism Ethics demand for full disclosure I need to mention my father and most of my family went to Murray County High, which, by the way, won the game 21-14.)
On his next Dalton visit they will ignore health concerns to listen and cheer — on cue — idiotic rants from a guy who has hated and mocked Southerners like them all his life. Trump carried Whitfield County in November with 69.7% of the vote.
