If you had $23 trillion you could afford all the land in the 48 lower United States. A bit too much? Then how about New Jersey for a mere $196,410 an acre? A new study by William Larson of the Federal Housing Finance Agency estimated the value of different property types across the nation. New Jersey’s 4.7 million acres is the most valuable real estate relative to its size. The most valuable state is California, worth 17 percent of the total lower 48. States with highly developed land are the most valuable. Land dedicated to farming is less valuable as is land in states where the federal government owns a lot of property. Wyoming, which is more than 50 percent owned by Washington, is valued at $1,558 per acre or $97 billion for the whole thing. See the 24/7 Wall Street list here.
