Tonight brings the event of the year for Trenton politics and the news media that covers it. It’s the 115th annual New Jersey Legislative Correspondents’ Club Show. It’s a much anticipated occasion where people in the news media make light of politicians in song and dance. Governors, this year Chris Christie, get a chance to shoot back in a speech. It supports journalism scholarships. The audience is like a Who’s Who of media, politics and the people around them: consultants and lobbyists and cabinet members, people you hear about in the news. It’s all in good fun and only once I can remember in the past 20 years did a pol get ugly about it. He’s gone and forgotten and good riddance. Michael Symons — co-author of “Chris Christie: The Inside Story Of His Rise To Power,” my sometimes radio sidekick and star of “Convention Quickies” on YouTube — produces, the show and takes part. He can’t sing but nobody cares. Last year he donned a blonde wig and pink sweater because the woman who was supposed to wear it as Bridget Ann Kelly of Bridgegate fame didn’t show up. Versatile, in the tradition of the show must go on, Mike is a thoroughly professional journalist, author, show producer and — as it turns out last year, at least — female impersonator.
Speaking of “Convention Quickie” videos, found this 2-minute one from 2008 Republicans in Minneapolis where the fellow who announced the N.J. votes for John McCain was then-Sen. Bill Baroni, who now is the former Port Authority executive under indictment in the Bridgegate scandal, along with Bridget Ann Kelly. A lesson in how quickly things change. See it here.
