There are so many candidates for the Republican nomination for president there isn’t a stage big enough to hold them all. Or a format that wouldn’t make it run less than “Gone With The Wind.” Fox News hosts the first one on Aug. 6 and decided to limit the debate to the Top 10 candidates based on an average of the last five national polls before Aug. 4. (Gosh, in the old days, there wasn’t so many dates or math involved.) There could be a tie so it might be 11 when it happens. NBC News took at look based on the latest from the five national polls it recognizes: Fox, NBC, Quinnipiac, CNN, Monmouth.
1. Jeb Bush 15.8%
2. Scott Walker 12.0%
3. Marco Rubio 11.6%
4. Ted Cruz 8.8%
5. Rand Paul 8.6%
6. Mike Huckabee 8%
7. Ben Carson 6.8%
8. Chris Christie 5.4%
9. Rick Perry 3.0%
10. Donald Trump 2.2%
NBC News says that means based on these polls, the candidates that would be left out are “Carly Fiorina (the only female candidate in the GOP field), Rick Santorum (the winner of the 2012 Iowa caucuses), Bobby Jindal (the sitting governor of Louisiana), John Kasich (the sitting governor of Ohio) and Lindsey Graham (the most senior U.S. senator in the GOP field).”
Some network should get the left-out candidates to do a debate after the one they’re left out of aira. I would watch.
