Hillary Clinton’s standing among Democrats and those voters who lean Democratic has slipped but she is still way out front. A new Monmouth University Poll shows Clinton with 51% of Democrats, and those leaving Democratic nationwide, which is down from 57% in June.
Bernie Sanders is a distant second at 17%, but his support has grown from 12% in June and 7% in April.
The Monmouth poll finds support for Vice President Joe Biden should grow if he chooses to enters the race. “An additional 12% of Democratic voters say they would be very likely to support Biden if he gets into the race and another 31% say they would be somewhat likely. Taken together with the support he currently holds in the vote choice question, about 1-in-4 voters say they would be very likely to get behind Biden, and more than half would be at least somewhat likely” the poll said.
“Most people seem to be focusing on a Sanders surge among the liberal wing of the party. But the bigger threat to Clinton may come from a Biden candidacy, where the two would be fighting for the same voters,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute in West Long Branch, NJ.
