Donald Trump is the object of plenty of scorn for remarks made about Sen. John McCain’s war record but Trump isn’t the only 2016 Republican wannabe in trouble for running his mouth. Chris Christie was called “vile” by a Congress member for talking about the death of one of his former Washington interns, Kevin Sutherland, 24, who was stabbed to death on a Washington subway train July 4. “Kevin Sutherland was a friend of mine,” Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut, said. “To use Kevin’s death to score political points is vile.” Christie referred to Sutherland’s death in a criminal justice speech, saying, “Kevin was stabbed to death on that train — right in front of people — by a man who had been arrested two days earlier for violent robbery,” Christie made it political by saying liberals liked “lax criminal justice policies.”
Sutherland’s family objected.
“The fact that Gov. Chris Christie would invoke my son’s name in a politically motivated speech just three days after our family laid him to rest shows that he cares little about the grief my family is feeling,” the Sutherland family said in a statement.
Himes, a Democrat, went further. “By speaking about Kevin Sutherland and his family in this way, Christie has once again shown himself as nothing more than a pure opportunist with no sense of decency and a severely distorted idea of right and wrong.”
The Sutherland family said had Christie taken a closer look at Kevin’s life, “He would have found someone who would never exploit someone else’s tragedy to further his own ambitions. He would have found someone very different from himself.”
